Bugle Boy fun facts
Most people don't realize that the recording of the Bugle Boy show was completely unplanned. I had decided to take an acoustic trio into that wooden army barracks. I had played the room several times before with piano and drums, but really thought it would be better without drums and with a guitar. So I called up a couple of old friends of mine who I hadn't played with in about 17 years. The guys showed up and read down the charts. There were some train wrecks, but we all laughed it off as a jazz date and went on our merry ways. A few months later I'm chatting with Erich (the guitar player) on the phone and he says, "Hey, have you listened to the recording off the board from the gig at the Bugle Boy?" I said, "No." He said you should really take another listen and that he thought there was something there. Well, I did take a listen and agreed. A phone call led to a conversation about the psycho-acoustic quality of the performances and why not edit and master and release? There you have it. No rehearsal, but really lovely acoustic jazz performances from all three of us. Lots of fun. Listen past the mistakes and you'll soon hear the quality in this little live disc.
Thanks for the great vibes folks. Also, happy everyone seems to like the new site.
My new discipline is to keep up with all these updates.thanks for listening,

Live vs. Recorded
When it comes to jazz it's hard to deny that live performance is jazz at its best. The ability to feel and hear the music as it's actually being created is a one of a kind experience. I'm not saying that the passion you hear in recorded music is not genuine but there is a considerable difference when it comes to live improvisation. Everyone in the ensemble has to be on their toes when the improv begins. The players have to listen in a way that doesn't happen when tracking in the studio. And when the listener becomes a part of the process one not only hears the magic in the moment but they also feel it. I worry that we have created a listener that no longer cares to hear the passion of the music as it is being created. I fear that we have cultivated listeners who only care to digest their music in cleaned-up ways. At least hip-hop and rap are clinical interpretations of sampled music that imply energetic expressions of the poets that write rap lyrics over beats. But, we have come to a point in hip-hop where fresh beats are becoming harder and harder to create. I support the jazz improvisational experience because it is a unique event. A unique event that is quickly becoming history because even in the world of jazz music the passion of creation is being removed. It's becoming a formula. I hate to think that we may be moving to a place in our history where we no longer appreciate or support the live improvised moment in music making.
That being said....I've just released, "KG3 Live! at the Bugle Boy". Hope your season will be bright.

Jun. 2008Summer Schedule
Seems like this year is just flying. Here we are in June and I am headed out of Texas heat for most of the summer. After a quick one-nighter in Houston on June 14th at Tommy’s Seafood Restaurant I’m headed to the west coast for a 3 week journey in the San Francisco Bay Area. I am on faculty at Jazz Camp West in La Honda, California. The camp is located in a YMCA facility in the redwood forest about 20 minutes from the Pacific Ocean. Camp is a collection of amateurs and professionals who all come together to celebrate and study this American art form. Days are spent in classes learning everything from latin percussion, voice, guitar and dance just to name a few. Evenings are the open mic performances from the students and the faculty concerts. Most attendees consider the price for camp is not about the educational opportunities but the evening concerts. Check out www.jazzcampwest.com to find out more about camp.
After camp is finished I’ll be staying in San Francisco to film a video. The tune will be the live version of “Everything Must Change” from the KG3 Live! at the Bugle Boy concert. Famed photographer, Frankie Frankeny, will be shooting and the post production will be done by Umlat Films. I am very excited about this project since I’ve never really done a professional video of any of my music.
If you are looking for some vintage footage from my career, start checking YouTube soon for clips. I recently transferred all of my old VHS tapes to DVD. These are live recordings from concerts and interviews that I have done over the past 15 years. Watching my hairstyles change over the years is really quite funny. The uploading process will be slow to happen so don’t loose patience with us and please keep doing a Kellye Gray search every time you are on YouTube.
Lastly this summer, in July I am headed to Eastern Europe headlining at the Viva Musica! festival in Bratislava, Slovak Republic. If you’re in that part of the woods on July 25th come on out and join in the fun.
Thanks so much for following my career and for supporting me. I love to be the channel for the sound but it takes your ears to hear it.

Feb. 2008February makes me smile
I love the month of February. I guess mainly because it's the month I was born in, but also because it is the most completely different month of all the months in a year. Sometimes it has 28 days and other times it's got 29 (like this year). It holds Valentine's Day and President's Day as well as Ground Hog's Day. Here in Texas the month of February brings a hint of springtime when the purple blossomed redbud trees and white blossomed dogwood trees burst forth with their blossoms and cover both sides of Lady Bird lake. The azalea bushes break out with their pink and red flowers and the occasional robin and cardinal begins to bounce around in the yard looking for worms. It's a pretty special time for mother nature to strut her stuff.
February 2008 will bring the launch party for the KG3 Live! at the Bugle Boy disc at the Bugle Boy in La Grange, Texas. A very small wooden army barracks that is a total listening room. The folks that run the place keep a tight reign on the "listening" part by not even allowing beverage service inside the room during performances. If you've got the hankering for something fresh to do on Sunday, February 24th at 4pm then come on down to La Grange and help us toast to the success of the year to come!
Kellye and company are planning two new releases for this year as well as booking a tour in Europe this summer. Stay tuned for all the news as it happens.
The albums are starting to get a wider distribution in record stores. You can always order anything from the catalog directly though just about any record store in the US. Or, of course, you can order from one of our companies that we partner with. Check out the Contact page of the site for all the links to the stores that sell Kellye Gray music and for some links to sites of people we love, businesses we support and sites we think are worth checking out.
Thanks for your support!!
