Kellye scats live on Austin tv!

Austin perfers to call itself the “live music capital of the world” these days. This is pretty much a fact when it comes to singer-songwriters, alt rock, americana, rock and bluegrass but when it comes to jazz the opportunities for live performance are few and far between.

When KEYE’s Austin Live producer called and said she was interested in presenting “scat” to the viewing audience we jumped at the chance. Not really understanding that scat singing is an extremely technical and viable part of the jazz artistic experience they call it “musical jibber-jabber” in the interview. Kellye does her best to clear up any misunderstanding about scat singing. She educates by example singing and scatting her way through George Gershwin’s “Summertime”.

Just two and a half minutes long, this little clip demonstrates the ease Kellye has with these master vocal techniques that most jazz singers just dream about. Her internal sense of time and near perfect pitch prove that she doesn’t need backing instruments to make the tune entertaining, musical and swinging.

Saw your show at One World tonight and loved every minute of it. Have been fans for a long time but had lost touch with where you were. Glad that you’re back in the Austin area and hope you’ll perform often. You are, indeed, one of a kind!

As usual, your show in February at Cezanne was extraordinary. You just continue to amaze me through the years…your relationship with the audience is second to none…no other performer I know can get an audience to laugh hysterically; then on a moments notice (Estate) make them weep…I feel blessed to have you in my life and my son Zack’s life as well…you are a gift to all of us and your voice is just like a fine wine…it just continues to mature and bloom with age.
